Buying Guide for Wide Format Color Printers
Print Size and Resolution
Consider the maximum print width you’ll require. Home offices and small businesses often benefit from printers supporting up to 11 x 17 inches, while professional large format applications need widths of 24 inches or more. Higher resolution (measured in dpi) will produce sharper images and finer details, essential for professional graphics, architectural plans, or photographic prints.
Print Speed and Volume
Speed, measured in pages per minute (PPM), matters when handling large print jobs. Fast speeds like 28 PPM enable efficient workflows in busy offices. Consider paper capacity and additional trays to reduce frequent refills. Features like automatic document feeders (ADF) support multi-page scanning and copying tasks.
Ink System and Cost Efficiency
Inkjet printers with cartridge-free or supertank designs save costs over time and reduce interruptions. Printers like Epson EcoTank models offer large ink reservoirs and bottle refills, ideal for high-volume printing. Think about ink longevity, ease of replacement, and whether the printer provides vibrant, smudge-resistant colors suitable for your applications.
Connectivity and Compatibility
Wireless connectivity, including dual-band Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, allows printing from mobile and desktop devices. Ethernet and USB options ensure compatibility with office networks and computers. Consider support for printing apps and cloud services for added convenience with remote printing.
Multifunction Features
If you require scanning, copying, or faxing, opt for all-in-one printers. Features like automatic duplex printing, touchscreen interfaces, and NFC make operations smoother, especially in a professional setting. Check for suitable document feeder capacity when handling multi-page documents.
Durability and Print Media Support
UV, water-resistant inks and durable printheads extend the lifetime of printed materials, especially outdoors. Analyze supported media types, like cardstock, envelopes, and various sheet or roll options. These features determine how versatile your printer will be for projects ranging from signage to elaborate marketing materials.
